A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday at Fr. Kayonza Secondary School in Hima Town Council, Kasese District, causing extensive damage to school property, including a dormitory and the library.
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, as many students were away on holiday at the time of the incident.
The fire occurred at the school located in Kinyamwengye Village, Karungibati Ward, within Hima Division.
According to police reports, the blaze destroyed part of the school’s roof, burned beds in the dormitory, and reduced library books to ashes.
Police in Hima Division, led by Division Police Commander SP Bwire Nerima Suzan, responded swiftly to the emergency.
They were joined by the Fire Brigade from Hima Cement Factory, and together they managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the school.
“The cause of the fire is not yet established. Investigations are still ongoing,” said Nelson Tumushime, SP and Spokesperson for the Police in Kasese.
Authorities have called for calm and assured the public that thorough investigations are underway to determine the cause of the incident.
This fire adds to a series of similar incidents in Kasese District over the past year.
In 2024, a fire gutted a boys’ dormitory at Margherita Demonstration School in Kisanga Cell, Nyamwamba Division, Kasese Municipality.
More recently, on January 1, 2025, another fire destroyed a dormitory at Kithulha Primary School.
