The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced new dates for the nomination of candidates for Parliamentary Elections, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs), pushing the exercise from October 15–16, 2025 to October 22–23, 2025.
The change, according to the Commission, was necessitated by Uganda’s role as host of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Mid-term Review Conference, which falls on the original nomination dates.
In a statement, the EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, said the adjustment was made to allow the country to give full attention to the international summit without disrupting electoral activities.
“This adjustment is necessitated by Uganda’s role as host of the NAM Mid-term Review Conference, which will bring together government officials, legislators, and representatives from NAM member states and international agencies,” Justice Byabakama explained.
“Key government institutions will be directly involved in planning, security, and diplomatic coordination during that period, hence the need to adjust the nomination schedule.”
The EC further confirmed that Presidential nominations will be conducted earlier, on September 23–24, 2025, with harmonization of campaign programmes set for September 25–27. Presidential campaigns will then run from September 29, 2025, until January 12, 2026.
For Parliamentary and Local Government candidates, campaigns will begin on November 10, 2025, running concurrently until January 12, 2026.
Polling for all elective positions — Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Councils is scheduled for January 12 to February 9, 2026, in line with Article 61(2) of the Constitution.
Justice Byabakama reassured Ugandans that the roadmap remains on course and urged aspirants and stakeholders to take note of the revised dates.
“In light of this adjustment, we call upon all stakeholders to prepare accordingly. A detailed copy of the electoral roadmap is available on the Commission’s website,” he said.
