Construction of the Hoima City Stadium is in its final phase, with 95 percent of the work already finished, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has confirmed.

On a recent inspection tour, Ogwang revealed that Turkish contractor SUMMA is on course to hand over the $129 million project by the end of October ahead of schedule.

He cautioned, however, that the facility will not be opened to the public until the remaining works are completed.

“The contractor and consultant have confirmed that the stadium is at 95%. The remaining 5% will be completed this month,” Ogwang said.

The minister noted that once completed, the stadium will be officially launched by President Museveni.

“We shall receive a commissioning programme where the President, together with the Minister of Education and Sports, will launch the facility,” he explained.

Ogwang also warned residents eager to access the new stadium to stay away until the official handover, pointing out that contractors had raised safety concerns.

“We value the excitement and support, but we ask the public to wait until the project is officially handed over,” he added.

President Museveni is expected to commission the 20,000-seater facility in December during his campaign tour of Bunyoro ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The stadium is designed as a multi-purpose sports hub and will feature facilities for football, rugby, athletics, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, indoor arena, training pitches, and outdoor courts.

Ogwang emphasized the wider significance of the project for Uganda’s sporting future.

“The completion of Hoima City Stadium is a big step for sports infrastructure in Uganda. It strengthens Afcon 2027 readiness and will turn Hoima into a hub for sports and economic growth.”
