NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has promised to make both primary and university education free in Uganda if elected president.
Speaking during campaign rallies in Kawempe South and North, where he addressed hundreds of supporters under heavy security deployment, Bobi Wine vowed to overhaul Uganda’s education system and ensure teachers are well paid.
“In a new Uganda, no primary child will pay school fees. Forget about this tendency where children don’t get food at school, and teachers will be well paid,” he said.
“In a new Uganda, university education will be free as it was during Amin and Obote’s reign,” he added.
Bobi Wine also criticized the current administration, saying President Yoweri Museveni is reluctant to leave power, while the country’s wealth from minerals such as gold and uranium has not translated into development for local communities.
“We are still rich. Apart from gold, uranium, and other minerals, every year Uganda exports gold worth $2 billion, yet the districts where this gold is mined don’t have tarmacked roads,” he said.
He also told residents of Kawempe that a gold deposit worth $12 trillion had been discovered in Busia, Uganda.
“This is the largest gold ore deposit in the world. Not even Dubai or England have this kind of wealth. Unfortunately, it is Museveni who controls this gold. We must fight hard to liberate ourselves,” he said.
Bobi also added that his vision is to ensure all Ugandans live a good life comparable to citizens in other countries.
“In a new Uganda, you won’t be the same. We have money, we have a lot of minerals. I want to make sure every Ugandan lives a good life like it is in other countries,” Bobi Wine promised.
He urged the people of Kawempe to vote for the umbrella and to prepare for a protest vote.
During the rally, an incident occurred when police attempted to disperse NUP supporters, resulting in several injuries. Among those affected were police officers, elderly people, and other attendees, as teargas filled the area.
