The immediate former speaker of parliament, Anita Among has sent congratulatory messages to Jacob Oboth Oboth and Thomas Tayebwa who were on Monday elected as the new leaders of the 12th parliament.
Among, who has been inactive on her social media platforms for the past few weeks, used X to send her congratulatory message.
“I join my colleagues in congratulating Rt Hon Jacob Marksons Oboth and Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa on their election as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament,” Among said.
Among expressed confidence in the new leaders, noting their role in shaping the legislative agenda.
“I have no doubt that your leadership will bolster the legislative agenda and promote outcomes that serve our nation’s best interests. I sincerely wish you success in your service to our country,” she added.
Oboth-Oboth and Thomas Tayebwa were elected on Monday by Parliament to lead the 12th House, with Oboth-Oboth garnering 441 votes and Tayebwa receiving 457 votes.
Despite her congratulatory message, Among did not attend the special session at Kololo Independence Grounds where the new leadership was elected.
Her absence comes amid an ongoing corruption probe linked to her residences, which many expected might have shortened her term. The reasons for her non-attendance remain unclear.
Among’s husband, Hashim Magogo, attended the session and cast a vote.
