Former Speaker and Bukedea District Woman MP Anita Among has been designated to serve on Parliament’s Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation, a committee that will be chaired by opposition legislator Francis Zaake.
The NRM committee appointments were announced by Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng as part of the allocation of Members of Parliament to various parliamentary committees.
Zaake, the Mityana Municipality MP, was designated as Chairperson of the Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation by the National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Anna Adeke was named Vice Chairperson.
The committee is mandated to track government promises, undertakings and commitments made on the floor of Parliament and ensure they are implemented by relevant government institutions.
Among’s appointment comes weeks after she stepped down as Speaker of Parliament and at a time when she is facing corruption-related court proceedings.
The assignment has attracted political interest due to the history between Among and Zaake. In 2021, Zaake was appointed as a Parliamentary Commissioner by the opposition but was later removed from the position following a vote in Parliament during Among’s tenure as Speaker.
With the latest appointments, Among returns to Parliament as an ordinary legislator and will serve on a committee chaired by Zaake, marking a notable shift in their political roles.
Meanwhile, several changes have been made to parliamentary committee assignments.
The NRM redesignated Moses Magogo from the influential Budget Committee, where he had served for five years, to the Human Rights Committee.
The ruling party also removed Patrick Isiagi from the Budget Committee. Isiagi is an uncle to Anita Among.
Former Finance Minister Matia Kasaija was appointed to serve on both the Agriculture Committee and the Committee on National Economy.
