Anita Rukundo Tayebwa, wife of Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in Uganda, with a focus on strengthening tourism and private-sector cooperation between the two countries.
Rukundo formally assumed the diplomatic role after presenting her Letters of Credence to Foreign Affairs Minister Adonia Ayebare at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices in Kampala.
In her new capacity, she pledged to promote stronger economic ties between Uganda and The Bahamas, particularly through partnerships between tourism operators and businesses in both countries.
“I pledge to strengthen tourism and private-sector cooperation between Uganda and The Bahamas, particularly by connecting tourism businesses of the two countries,” Rukundo said.
She highlighted the contribution of tourism to The Bahamas’ economy, noting that the Caribbean nation received more than 12.5 million tourists and generated approximately US$5.27 billion in tourism revenue in 2025.
Uganda, by comparison, recorded 1.64 million international tourist arrivals and approximately US$1.62 billion in tourism revenue during the same year.
Rukundo said the figures demonstrate opportunities for Uganda to expand cooperation with The Bahamas, particularly through tourism partnerships, private-sector engagement and the exchange of business opportunities.
Her appointment is expected to provide a platform for promoting bilateral business connections and strengthening cooperation in tourism, investment and trade.
The honorary consul role is also expected to facilitate business-to-business partnerships and encourage greater engagement between the private sectors of the two countries.
Rukundo was accompanied by her husband, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, and their son during the occasion.
