Government has committed Shs175 billion to Abubaker Technical Services to accelerate construction of the Hoima–Busunju Road, a key infrastructure project expected to support Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, announced the funding during an inspection of the ongoing works on the 145-kilometre road, which has a contract value of Shs309 billion.
The project is considered strategically important for improving connectivity to Uganda’s oil-producing region, facilitating trade and easing the movement of football teams, officials, visitors and goods during the continental tournament.
Construction works are reportedly about 40 per cent complete, with completion targeted for February 2027. The government advance is intended to address the contractor’s cash-flow challenges and accelerate implementation ahead of the tournament.
Of the Shs175 billion, Shs65 billion will be allocated to the construction of Kafu Bridge across River Kafu. The bridge is expected to help address flooding challenges and improve the reliability of transport along the route.
During the inspection, Byamukama urged the contractor to fulfil its contractual obligations and accelerate construction to ensure the project is delivered within the agreed timeframe.
Once completed, the road is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, improve access to the oil-producing region and facilitate the movement of goods and people beyond AFCON 2027.
The minister also met local leaders and residents affected by the Kinogozi–Buhimba Road and Mparo Bypass projects to discuss land acquisition and concerns raised by project-affected persons (PAPs).
Byamukama clarified that developments located within established road reserves would not attract compensation, while eligible project-affected persons would be compensated in accordance with the applicable procedures.
The Ministry of Works and Transport continues to engage contractors, local leaders and affected communities to address outstanding challenges and facilitate the delivery of key road infrastructure projects ahead of AFCON 2027.
