At least 73 people were killed in accident in the past one week on Uganda roads, the Traffic Police have said.
Traffic Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, Michael Kananura said between November 11 and 18, 2023, a total of 390 accidents were registered all over the country in which 73 people were killed and over 298 sustained serious injuries.
Kananura said 39 of these accidents involved motorcycles in which 15 passengers were affected, 24 riders and 27 pedestrians.
Police also noted that in the past one week, their operations saw a total of 1533 motorcycles impounded for various offences.
He mentioned that 800 motorcycles were impounded for riding without valid licences, 488 for riding without helmets,52 for being in dangerous mechanical condition, 31 for carrying more than one passenger and 116 motorcycles were impounded for other offences.
The traffic police spokesperson said as the festive season draws near, indiscipline case including over speeding, overloading, dangerous loading, distracted driving, driving without valid licence and driving while fatigued go up.
He however revealed that they have reactivated all fika salama check points on major highways and all traffic police checkpoints to check on indiscipline.
According to Kananura, at these points, all passenger vehicle drivers, especially for buses will be subjected to drink-driving tests.
