RDC turns heat on KCCA: Kiteezi landfill tragedy was not an accident but negligence

Kasangati RDC Frank Kyazze has said someone must be held accountable for last week’s tragedy that saw Kiteezi landfill collapse and burying a number of houses and people who were working there.

Speaking during the handover of relief items to over 700 people by Kiteezi Samaritan, Kyazze said it is high time government took action against those responsible for “this negligence.”

“I strongly believe this was not an accident and if it was one, it was manmade and someone must be held responsible for whatever happened. This the landfill that KCCA has used for the last over 20 years and one could easily see that this(tragedy) has been in waiting for a very long time,” Kyazze said.

There has been evidence to show that where KCCA Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka was informed of the looming catastrophe in Kiteezi, he turned a blind eye to the same.

A month to the tragedy, the KCCA director for public health, Dr. Daniel Okello wrote to Kisaka and her deputy over the matter but his letter was ignored.

Speaking on Friday, the Kasangati RDC said heads must roll somewhere.

“If we leave things to go the way they have been going, I think we shall not be heading in the right direction. Someone must be held responsible for this negligence.”

He however dismissed claims that government has not done anything to help victims after last Saturday’s tragedy.

“This incident happened abruptly and no body had prepared for it but so far as I look at the response, government is doing whatever it can.  I don’t think we are just seated. Let us appreciate whatever little has been done,” the RDC said.

On Friday, Police said the total number of dead bodies so far recovered has reached 35 after one more was retrieved.

The number of missing persons stands at 28.
