Supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda(PLU) have warned a section of Members of Parliament against meddling in affairs of their patron, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Speaking ahead of their planned march to deliver a petition to the speaker of parliament, the PLU supporters said they are protesting against what they termed as demeaning conduct of certain Members of Parliament towards their leader.
“This nonsense must stop with President Museveni’s leadership. If some politicians spend all their time politicking, when will they work for the people,” David Kabanda, the PLU general secretary said on Monday.
The PLU supporters say there are many issues of national concern that need MPs’ attention other than Gen Muhoozi.
Recently, a section of MPs said Gen Muhoozi should be summoned to parliament to explain recent controversial statements on social media, which have sparked controversy both domestically and internationally.
This has attracted backlash from Gen Muhoozi’s supporters.
Gen Muhoozi recently responded to the calls to have him summoned to appear in parliament.
“We urge all patriotic Ugandans to join us in promoting unity and respect for our leaders. We plan to request the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament to allow us to table a motion that addresses the issue of undermining and disrespecting our treasured leaders. We believe in resolving this matter peacefully and avoiding confrontation,” Muhoozi said.
The PLU leader emphasized that their primary objective is to protect the reputation and integrity of parliament.
“Our goal is to protect the image of our state institutions from individuals who seek to destroy the progress made by the National Resistance Movement (NRM),” he added.
Muhoozi noted that it was time to put an end to what he described as a growing culture of disrespect toward national leaders. He vowed that PLU remains committed to fostering a society where leadership is honored and upheld.
“We want to send a clear message to all those who disrespect our leaders: enough is enough. We aspire to build a united Uganda where everyone respects and supports our leaders,” he stated.
