Mezo Noir: Top Kampala night club reopens after death incident

Mezo Noir, a high-end hangout in Kololo, has reportedly reopened about ten days after its temporary closure, which followed the mysterious death of Martha Ahumuza Murari.

Patrons disclosed that over the weekend, business at Mezo Noir appeared to be back to normal, although turnout was lower than before. This has been attributed to the unannounced nature of the reopening.

On March 20, Mezo Noir’s management posted a notice announcing the temporary closure, a move that was later linked to Martha’s tragic death at the venue. While the exact cause of her death remains unknown, speculation surrounding the incident continues.

Mezo’s social media statement cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the closure, assuring customers that an official reopening date would be communicated later. However, management has yet to make a formal public announcement regarding its resumption of operations.

Recently, detectives investigating the case retrieved WhatsApp conversations between Martha (deceased) and the prime suspect, Edward Mugabo, a cashier at the bar, providing insight into their final interactions.

The recovered messages from Martha’s phone reveal that she had reached out to Mugabo, inquiring whether he would be at Mezo Noir on the night of the incident.

Reports indicate that before meeting Mugabo at Mezo Noir, Martha first visited another bar in Kololo at around 10 p.m., where she stayed for approximately an hour and a half. Around 11:30 p.m., she proceeded to Mezo Noir to meet Mugabo, where she allegedly consumed a poisoned drink, leading to her collapse.

A close  informed this publication that the available evidence does not, in any way, implicate the bar or its management in Martha’s death.

Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident as Mezo Noir quietly resumes its operations.

Martha’s death sparked widespread discussion on social media and beyond, with many speculating about poisoning.

However, during the burial service at All Saints Church in Nakasero, her father, Seth Muraali, urged the public to allow the family to mourn in peace and refrain from spreading false information.

He also assured that they would seek the truth about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Martha was laid to rest at her ancestral home at Nyarubaga Village in Mbarara on Sunday, March 23.
