Archbishop Stephen Kazimba Mugalu has called on the government to use Good Friday a day marking the suffering of Jesus Christ as an opportunity to release political prisoners as a gesture of mercy and reconciliation.
He made the appeal during joint prayers and commemoration organized by the Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) at the Old Kampala Secondary School playground.
While preaching to thousands of believers gathered for the solemn occasion, the Church of Uganda Archbishop directly addressed Vice President Jessica Alupo, who had just arrived for prayers.
“H.E Jessica Alupo, you can use this trick as government and decide to always release some of the political prisoners,” he said.
The event brought together thousands of Christians from various denominations, who converged at the Old Kampala grounds in unified worship and remembrance of Christ’s passion.
The Catholic procession was led by Bishop Paul Ssemogerere, the Archbishop of the Kampala Archdiocese, with thousands of faithful marching from Rubaga Cathedral in a reflective Way of the Cross.
Bishop Moses Banja of Namirembe Diocese led Anglican congregants from Namirembe Cathedral, with participants including youth, elders, and community leaders.
Jeronymos Muzeeyi, the Archbishop of the Uganda Orthodox Church, led Orthodox Christians from St. Nicholas Cathedral in Namungoona in a solemn Way of the Cross procession, symbolizing a powerful reflection of Christ’s journey to Calvary.
The unified event has highlighted the strength of ecumenical collaboration in Uganda and echoed a strong message of justice, mercy, and national healing.
