A family member who preferred anonymity since they are not authorized to speak on behalf of the Ruparelia family has given an insight into some of Rajiv Ruparelia’s last moments before his untimely death in a road accident.
Rajiv, as he was commonly referred to, died in a fiery road crash after the Nissan GTR registration number, UAT 638L he was driving hit temporary concrete barriers at Busabala flyover traffic lights , overturned and caught fire.
He died on the spot.
According to the family member, Rajiv had jetted into the country from London on Friday to attend the wedding of his friend, Jonathan Bahizi Buteera, son to retired Justice Richard Butera.
The ceremony took place today at All Saints Church in Nakasero.
Bahizi on Saturday wedded Liz Mutoni at a function held on Saturday at All Saints Church in Nakasero.
“Having jetted into the country on Friday, he caught up with his friends the evening and by the time of the crash, set was preparing to be the groomsman at his friend’s wedding. He decided to drive and go try out the suit before the wedding. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to reach his destination.”
The family member said on Friday evening, Rajiv was supposed to have dinner with his family but since his dad, businessman, Sudhir Ruparelia was attending the Nnaabagereka Queen’s Ball at Speke Resort Munyonyo, they were not able to meet for the dinner.
“The dinner had therefore been planned for today(Saturday) evening after his friend’s wedding. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it for the family dinner.”
It is reported that Rajiv was set to fly back to the UK where he lives on Monday.
“This time round, when he came back to Uganda, he said he felt more at home than on any other occasion. He had also hinted at finally returning and staying home forever.”
