The bodyguard to National Unity Platform president, Robert Kyagulanyi , Edward Ssebuufu, widely known as Eddy Mutwe has been charged with aggravated robbery following his mysterious disappearance over a week ago.
Mutwe was on Monday arraigned before Masaka Grade One Magistrate Abdullah Kayiza and charged in connection with a violent robbery incident allegedly committed on May 18, 2024, in Manja Village, Lwengo District.
According to the amended charge sheet, he is accused alongside Achilleo Kivumbi, Gadafi Mugumya, Grace Wakabi Smart, and others still at large, of robbing Margaret Kayondo, a journalist with Radio Simba.
They allegedly took a sweater from the journalist and her worth worth shs730,000.
The group is also accused of assaulting an NBS TV journalist, Zainab Namusaazi and destroyed her camer.
Mutwe who has been missing for several days arrived at court in a private saloon car, barely able to walk.
Police officers helped him into the courtroom, where his lawyers said he appeared weak and in visible pain.
His legal team alleges that Mutwe was subjected to brutal torture during his disappearance, claiming he was beaten with electric cables, electrocuted, and that his genitals were pulled repeatedly.
However, his lawyers maintain that the charges are politically motivated and designed to silence dissent within the opposition. The court remanded him to Masaka Prison as investigations continue.
He was remanded to Masaka government prison until May, 25.
