The Ministry of Internal Affairs on Monday announced that the mass enrollment for new national IDs starts this month.
The State Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen David Muhoozi said the mass enrolment starts on May, 27.
He however said there is an ongoing pilot enrollment that began with the renewal of IDs of the Board of Directors of NIRA and the top management of Ministry of Internal Affairs and will end on May 26.
“During the pilot phase, NIRA will register, renew and issue ID’s at selected sites with identified key stakeholders. Beginning May 27th 2025, the National Identification and Registration Authority will mobilize and deploy at the parish level within every District in the 146 administrative units of this country,” the minister said.
Requirements
According to NIRA, renewal of national IDs will be free of charge and during the application process, the applicant shall present an original or a photocopy of the expired ID card or a valid police letter in case the card is lost.
“A renewal is not a change or correction of particulars, therefore, the new card will bear the biographic details of the old card. Your NIN will not change,” NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo said.
The registration for new national IDs who those who have never got them and are above 18 will also be free of charge but applicants who are citizens by will be required to present a photocopy of the National ID belonging to at least one parent.
In the absence of the parents identification, the applicant shall present the identification of one of their four grandparents ,a blood relative who is a direct descendant of any of the four grandparents, valid letters from the LC1 Chairman, parish chief or LC3 and endorsed by the GISO or DISO or RDC.
For children below the age of 18 and are registering for the first time, they might be require to provide additional information to establish citizenship.
“It is the duty of the applicant to present complete, accurate and reliable information in order to fast track this process,” NIRA said.
This will be done at parish level.
Change of particulars
According to NIRA, anyone seeking to change or correct their particulars, including names and age among others will be required to pay shs200,000 and that this service will be offered at NIRA District offices and not at parish registration points given the legal requirements and documentation.
The applicant will be required to present the expired card for defacing or a valid police letter where the original ID is lost or stolen.
On the other hand, those who lost their national IDs are seek to get a new one will be required to pay shs50,000.
