The newly elected Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, today, May 9th, celebrated his First Mass as the head of the Catholic Church at the Sistine Chapel.
During his homily, which he delivered in both English and Italian, Pope Leo echoed the words of a biblical psalm, saying, “I will sing a new song to the Lord because he has done marvels.”
He expressed gratitude to the cardinal electors for entrusting him with the sacred responsibility of leading the Church.
“I want to report the words from the responsorial psalm, a new song to the Lord, because he has done marvels, and indeed, not just with me, but with all of us,” the Pope said.
Addressing the cardinals present at the Mass, Pope Leo urged them to reflect on God’s wonders and blessings.
“My brother cardinals, as we celebrate this morning, I invite you to recognize the marvels that the Lord has done, the blessings that the Lord continues to pour.”
He also spoke of the profound responsibility of succeeding Saint Peter and leading the universal Church, emphasizing the need for collective support and unity.
“The mystery of Peter, You have called me to carry the cross and to be blessed with that mission. And I know I can rely on each and every one of you to walk with me as we continue as a church, as a community of friends of Jesus, as believers to announce the good news, to announce the gospel,” he said.
The mass marks the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s spiritual leadership and his commitment to guiding the Church with humility and faith.
