The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has unveiled an online pre-registration portal for Ugandans to apply for or renew their National Identification Cards.
Available at https://prereg.nsis.nira.go.ug/pre-registration-ui/#/eng, the platform enables applicants to start the registration process .
This is aimed at easing pressure on physical registration centers
Previously, the registration process was predominantly manual, requiring applicants to visit NIRA offices or designated registration points to fill out paper forms.
Whereas previously, one had to first physically visit the registration centres, with the new pre-registration portal, one can easily fill in the requirements and only goes to the parish where the registration is to be done for capture of their biometrics including fingerprints and iris among others.
The new portal allows first-time registrants and card renewals to submit detailed personal and parental information digitally.
Once an application is completed, the system generates a unique Application ID that applicants must present, along with a printed copy of their application form, at the nearest NIRA registration center to finalize biometric enrollment.
However, NIRA says the availability of the self service function does not replace the conventional way of applicants walking to NIRA centers and fill in physical forms.
It is rather a choice one can make, either to do it online or simply go fill in forms.
“For better functionality, applicants are encouraged to access the browser using computers- not phones,” NIRA says.
