Tragedy has struck the Makerere University community following the death of Tikiboneka Mariam, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Education (Literature and English Language Studies) at the College of Education and External Studies.
Mariam was fatally knocked down by a trailer on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 28, at around 4:00 PM in Nakalama, Iganga District. She was reportedly on school practice at the time of the accident.
The Makerere University Guild Office confirmed the devastating news in a public announcement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of one of their own.
“Sad moments from the mother college of Makerere University, the College of Education and External Studies. We regret to announce the passing of Tikiboneka Mariam,” the statement read.
“She tragically lost her life… after being knocked by a trailer at Nakalama, Iganga, while on school practice.”
The Guild Office extended its heartfelt condolences to Mariam’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire College of Education and External Studies community, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the risks students face while serving in the field.
