High Sound for Children Uganda has launched a six-week training program on safe and responsible media usage in four schools supported by Promoting Equality in African Schools Organization (PEAS) .
The training seeks to empower students with media literacy skills on how to safe navigate both offline and online and media spaces.
By unpacking different forms of media, the program will cover topics such as generating news articles, broadcast media, online safety, and the impact of media on young minds.
The initiative comes at a time when students are increasingly exposed to various media platforms, often without proper guidance.
“This program will empower children to navigate media platforms safely as we amplify their voices to speak out on issues affecting them. The teachers’ training aims to equip them with practical tools to guide the children through the child-led program, which will help them engage with media in a safe and informed manner,” said Ms. Hadijah Mwanje, the Executive Director of High Sound for Children Uganda.
Participants will be introduced to hands-on strategies and resources to integrate media education into their classrooms, ensuring that students not only consume media safely but also become critical thinkers in an increasingly digital world.
“Today we have begun by training the teachers who will serve as patrons of media clubs to be established in the respective schools. The purpose of the training is to help them understand and implement the program,” added Ms Mwanje.
The initiative which is a partnership between High Sound for Children Uganda and Promoting Equality in African Schools aims to introduce media to 10 schools that are supported by PEAS to unpack media for young people.
The training is expected to reach dozens of educators and ultimately benefit thousands of students through improved media literacy and awareness in schools.
George Ogaba, the head teacher at Onwards and Upwards Secondary School – Buloba, underscored the vital importance of equipping teachers with the skills and knowledge to guide students in safe and responsible media use.
“In an age where digital content is more accessible than ever, the school recognizes that teachers play a crucial role in helping young people navigate the online world thoughtfully and safely,” he said during a teacher’s training workshop hosted by Onwards and Upwards Secondary School – Buloba.
The training was attended by teachers from four schools namely; Peas Pioneer High School- Mityana, Peas Samling Nama High School, Peas Horizon Luweero, Peas Onwards and Upwards Secondary- Buloba and will spread to more teachers in schools supported by PEAS.
