Uganda has been elected to the third part of the ICAO Council by the ICAO Assembly for the period 2025-2028.
The election happened during the 42nd Session of the Assembly of International Aviation Organization (ICAO) running from September23 to October, 3 in Montreal, Canada.
Following a competitive process, Uganda received 155 votes from 185 member states, following the first and second part elections on September, 27.
The Ugandan delegation is being led by Minister of Works and Transport Gen Edward Katumba
Wamala, accompanied by Amb. Allan Kajik the acting High Commissioner in Ottawa, UCAA Director General Mr. Fred Bamwesigye and senior officials from UCAA and Ministry of Works and Transport.
The 36-member Council is the highest decision-making organ of ICAO responsible for setting standards and recommended practices governing the global aviation industry.
The third part of the council is reserved for states ensuring geographic representation.
All elected states will form the council for a three-year term.
The new council is comprises of the first part which has states of chief importance in air transport including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States while the second part has states which make the largest contribution to the provision of facilities for international civil air navigation: Argentina, Colombia, Denmark, Egypt, India, Mexico,
Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and Switzerland.
The third part where Uganda falls are states aimed at ensuring geographic representation including Angola, Belize, Cuba, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Malaysia, Mali, Morocco, Poland, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Uganda,the United Arab Emirates, and Uruguay.
Speaking from Montreal, Gen Katumba Wamala expressed hailed Uganda’s election that he said was an international vote of confidence in the country’s aviation sector.
He described this as an opportunity to learn best practices in the aviation industry, strengthening partnerships.
He thanked President Museveni and the Ugandan government for the support accorded to the aviation
industry.
He also revealed that Uganda would be represented on the council by Mr. Kabbs Tijuke who has been the CAA representative to ICAO since May 2018.
