Buganda Kingdom is in mourning following the death of Princess Diana Balizzamuggale Teyeggala, a younger sister to Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who has died at the age of 59.
The death was officially announced by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, on behalf of the Kabaka, the royal household and the kingdom at large. Princess Diana passed away after a prolonged illness.
“Her Royal Highness Princess Diana Balizzamuggale Teyeggala has been called by God,” Mayiga said in a statement confirming the loss.
Princess Diana was a daughter of the late Kabaka Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Muteesa II, one of Buganda’s most revered monarchs.
Born in October 1966 while her father was living in exile, Princess Tebeggala never had the opportunity to meet him before his death. She later became part of the immediate royal family and was among the younger siblings of the reigning Kabaka, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
According to kingdom officials, she passed away at a medical facility in Kisubi, along Entebbe Road. While the nature of her illness was not disclosed, the Katikkiro said she had been receiving treatment for some time, both locally and abroad.
Conveying condolences to the Kabaka, Mayiga described the death as a profound personal loss and a significant blow to the kingdom.
“We deeply sympathise with Your Majesty, Kabaka. This is a great loss, and we regret that we have not been able to shield you from this pain,” he said.
Buganda Kingdom has also released burial arrangements for the late princess.
According to the programme, on Sunday, December 21, her body will be taken to the Kasubi Royal Tombs, where a night vigil will be held.
On Monday, a church service will be conducted at the Church of Uganda in Kasubi, near the royal tombs. Thereafter, Princess Teyeggala will be laid to rest at the Kasubi Royal Tombs in accordance with Buganda royal customs.
