Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has thanked President Museveni for what she described as his “parental grace” and decision to grant her mercy following her release from house arrest.
In a message shared on X, Among began by thanking God for what she described as the “gift of life and freedom” before expressing appreciation to Museveni for his intervention.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among said.
Her statement followed an announcement by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba that Museveni had directed her release from house arrest. Muhoozi said the President had also decided that Among would not be prosecuted.
Among had been under house arrest since May 2026 amid investigations into allegations relating to corruption, accumulation of illicit wealth and abuse of office during her tenure as Speaker of Parliament.
In the same message on Wednesday, Among also applauded Gen Muhoozi for “his professionalism throughout this period.”
“ As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership.”
Among’s comments come after political and community leaders from the Teso sub-region appealed to Museveni to forgive her and allow her to seek specialised medical treatment.
Museveni’s decision has generated renewed public debate about the handling of the allegations against Among and the broader question of accountability and presidential clemency in Uganda.
