NRM’s Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been declared winner of the hotly contested 2026 general elections, ensuring he has won a seventh term as President of Uganda.
The Electoral Commission on Saturday declared that Museveni had won 71.65% of the vote having garnered 7.9 million votes, with his main opponent, National Unity Platform’s Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, trailing with about 2 million votes representing 24% of the total votes.
The 71.65% is however below the 80% that Museveni had predicted to win with during the polling day.
By the end of this term in 2031, Museveni will have led Uganda for 45 years, having come into power in 1986 after the five-year Luweero bush war.
Earlier, Kyagulanyi had said he would not accept the outcome of the election.
“In addition to the ballot stuffing, the military take-over of the election, detention of our leaders and polling officials and others electoral offences, their results have zero backing,” he posted on his social media platforms.
It will remain to be seen if Kyagulanyi will go to court to challenge the results officially.
