The LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube District, Peter Banura, has died following a fatal road accident that occurred on Saturday evening in Kikuube Town Council.
Banure, who is also the son of Maj. Gen Matayo Kyaligonza, was reportedly knocked down by a speeding vehicle in Butyamba Village, within the Butyamba IDP area.
According to police, the crash involved a Toyota Hiace, whose driver fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the development, saying investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are underway.
“Police in the Albertine South Region are investigating a fatal road traffic crash involving the LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube District, Mr. Banura Peter,” Rusoke said.
“The incident occurred in Butyamba Village (Butyamba IDP area), Kikuube Town Council, where the victim was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace motor vehicle.”
He added that the deceased was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“He was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. However, the vehicle has since been recovered and impounded by police,” Rusoke stated.
Police said they have launched investigations to trace and arrest the driver.
“Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to assist with the ongoing investigations.”
The news of Banure’s death has sent shockwaves across the region, with leaders and residents mourning him as a dedicated public servant.
Hoima City West MP-elect Ismail Kasule Amooti expressed deep sorrow, describing Banure as a committed leader whose service will be remembered.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our comrade, Araali Peter Banura, the LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube District, who has just perished in a terrible accident,” Amooti said.
