UPPC Print School unveils tech-driven curriculum to equip youth with digital skills

The Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) Print School has rolled out a revamped curriculum aimed at equipping learners with both traditional printing expertise and high-demand digital skills.

The updated programme introduces certifications in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity and Data Analysis, reflecting a strategic shift toward aligning technical training with the needs of a rapidly evolving digital economy.

According to the school’s principal, Caleb Kutamba, the institution is responding to youth unemployment by combining classroom instruction with hands-on industrial experience. The production floor has been transformed into a live training environment, enabling students to gain practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.

More than 100 technicians have graduated from the programme over the past year. Some have been retained within UPPC’s commercial printing and publishing divisions, while others have secured employment in the private sector.

The revised curriculum also strengthens training in Desktop Publishing (DTP), with learners gaining proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Additional course offerings include digital printing, with a focus on colour management and workflow optimisation, as well as technical engineering modules covering computer repair, offset machine operations and post-press processes. Foundational digital literacy courses are also available to support beginners.

To accommodate a wider range of learners, the school operates campuses in Entebbe and Kampala. The Entebbe branch hosts daily evening practical sessions, while the Kampala campus offers evening and weekend classes tailored to working professionals.

Admissions are conducted three times a year — in January, April and August — with programmes structured as either one-month intensive courses or six-month professional apprenticeships. All courses are assessed by the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT).

Kutamba said the curriculum is designed to be future-oriented, blending technical competencies with entrepreneurial skills. Students also have access to a digital cloud library and video-based learning resources to support a hybrid training model.

Enrollment is currently open for the upcoming intake, with prospective students encouraged to apply for programmes that prepare them for opportunities in an increasingly competitive global job market.
