Police have arrested eight men who have been posing as hawkers and snatching phones and stealing vehicle parts at the Jinja Road traffic lights.
The arrests come after public outcry over repeated incidents of phone snatching, theft of side mirrors, and other criminal activities along the busy road road.
Police at Jinja Road Division carried out operations on 28th May 2026, between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., in Wampewo, Punjan, the former Electoral Commission offices, and around the Jinja Road traffic lights.
SP Racheal Kawala, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said the suspects have been terrorizing Ugandans while pretending to be hawkers.
“Preliminary findings indicate that some of the suspects had been masquerading as hawkers and vendors while engaging in criminal activities along the road,” she said.
The suspects have been charged and are awaiting court hearings.
