The Registrar of Companies has deregistered 37,702 companies from Uganda’s official register after they failed to seek restoration following their earlier removal for non-compliance with annual return filing obligations.
According to a public notice issued under Section 130(6) of the Companies Act, Cap.106, the affected companies had initially been struck off the register through notices published on July 20, August 14 and August 30, 2023 after failing to file annual returns for a continuous period of five years.
Companies that wished to remain operational were given a 12-month window to apply for restoration onto the register.
However, the Registrar confirmed that thousands did not take action within the prescribed period.
“The Registrar of Companies has deregistered 37,702 companies that failed to apply for restoration,” the notice states.
The mass deregistration marks one of the country’s biggest company register clean-up exercises and signals tougher enforcement of statutory compliance requirements among registered businesses.
URSB urged business owners, directors and stakeholders to verify whether their companies are affected by checking the published list and seeking guidance where necessary.
The Bureau said inquiries can be made through its offices across the country.
