A 10-year-old pupil at Hill Preparatory School in Naguru has died after drowning in the school’s swimming pool during a swimming lesson.
The deceased has been identified as George Nsawa, a learner with special needs.
According to the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, police were notified of the incident on July 3 and immediately commenced investigations.
“The incident occurred during a swimming lesson at the school’s swimming pool,” he said.
He added that the body was taken to the city mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
“The body was conveyed to the city mortuary, and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether there was any negligence on the part of the person responsible for supervising the pupils,” Owoyesigyire added.
Police said inquiries are focusing on the events leading to the drowning, including whether proper safety measures and supervision were in place during the swimming lesson.
