Police have arrested two more suspects in connection with the murder of SC Villa captain David Owori, bringing the number of suspects in custody to four as investigations into the footballer’s death intensify.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the latest arrests followed investigations into the mobile phones belonging to the deceased, which police traced after the attack.
He said investigators managed to identify people who had possessed the phones and arrested two additional suspects believed to be buyers of the stolen devices.
“In our investigations, we managed to trace those who had the phones of the deceased. In the process, we got suspects whom we believe are buyers of these stolen phones and arrested two more,” Rusoke said.
The arrests bring the number of suspects currently in police custody to four, although Rusoke said the number could increase as investigations continue.
“At the moment, we have four suspects, and the number may increase,” he said.
Rusoke said police are now narrowing their investigations to the people directly responsible for the attack that left Owori injured and subsequently led to his death.
“We are zeroing in on the suspects who injured the victim, occasioning his death,” he said.
He said investigators are also examining the involvement of people who may have assisted in the commission of the offence at different stages.
“We are interested in those who committed the offence, those who aided in its commission, before, during and after the commission of the actual offence,” Rusoke said.
The police spokesperson, however, cautioned against assuming that everyone found in possession of a stolen item linked to the deceased was directly involved in his murder.
“It won’t simply be accusing you of buying the stolen item of the murdered person,” Rusoke said.
He explained that investigators are seeking evidence to establish the role played by each suspect before taking further action.
Police are continuing to trace the chain through which Owori’s phones changed hands, with the investigation expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding his death and identify those directly responsible.
Rusoke said the investigation remains active and that additional arrests could follow as police gather more evidence.
