Police have recovered an AK-47 rifle and several rounds of ammunition from an abandoned building that was being demolished in Kijabijo Cell, Kimwanyi Ward, Kira Municipality in Wakiso District.

The firearm was recovered on August 22 after residents alerted police about a suspected weapon hidden inside the dilapidated structure.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, officers from Kasangati Police Station responded to the information and recovered the rifle together with ammunition from the old building.

“Police officers from Kasangati responded to the information and recovered an AK-47 rifle together with several rounds of ammunition from the old building,” SP Kawala said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the building had previously been occupied by individuals believed to have been involved in criminal activities.

Police said one of the former occupants had been arrested in connection with the 2024 shooting of a mobile money attendant in Ntinda.

“One of the former occupants was arrested in connection with the shooting of a mobile money attendant in Ntinda in 2024,” Kawala said.

The recovered firearm and ammunition have since been secured for further examination and ballistic analysis to establish whether the weapon was used in previous crimes.

SP Kawala said investigations are ongoing to establish the ownership of the firearm, determine how it ended up at the premises and identify any other people connected to the weapon.
