Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has distanced herself from a planned celebration reportedly organised to mark her release from house arrest, after Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba threatened to arrest anyone involved in the event.

The proposed celebration was reportedly scheduled for September 16, with State Minister for Local Government and Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere calling on fellow legislators to attend in large numbers.

“For the release of former Speaker, on September 16, as MPs we are going to celebrate her. Let us show her solidarity and love,” Nameere said in a TikTok video, according to reports.

The planned event, however, drew a sharp response from Gen Muhoozi, who said there would be no celebration for Among and warned that those involved would be arrested.

“There will be absolutely no party for AAA. We shall arrest anybody involved in that nonsense!” Muhoozi posted on X on September 8, referring to Among by her initials.

He added: “Forgiving someone does not mean they do not have unresolved cases.”

Among subsequently denied authorising the event and said nobody associated with her was organising it.

“I have learned that a party is purportedly being organised on my behalf. I wish to explicitly state that I have not authorised any such gathering in my name, and no individual associated with me is orchestrating such an event. Kindly dismiss any misinformation in this regard,” she posted on X.

She later directly responded to Muhoozi, reiterating that neither she nor people associated with her had made arrangements for a party.

Among’s planned celebration follows her release from house arrest after more than three months under tight security restrictions.

Security agencies raided residences and properties linked to the former Speaker in May 2026 as part of investigations into allegations including corruption, abuse of office, illicit wealth accumulation and money laundering.

It was reported that  various items, including cash and electronic devices, were recovered during the searches.

On August 25, Muhoozi announced that President Yoweri Museveni had instructed him to release Among from house arrest and that she would not be prosecuted over the allegations.

“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Muhoozi said.

He also said Museveni had decided to forgive Among, adding that she had “made mistakes” but would not be prosecuted.

Security personnel were subsequently withdrawn from Among’s residences, and she confirmed that she was free. The former Speaker thanked Museveni for what she described as “parental grace” and also praised Muhoozi for his handling of the situation.

Among who remains the Woman Member of Parliament for Bukedea  said following her release that she looked forward to resuming her work for her constituents.
