A state prosecutor attached to Nebbi has been found dead in his house in Nebbi Municipality, officials have said.
Deputy Resident State Attorney Emmanuel Bumbi Naguyo was found dead at his rented residence in Nebbi Municipality, triggering shock among colleagues at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Naguyo’s body was discovered on Monday morning in his room in Riverview Cell, Central Ward, near Tokyo House, after he failed to report to court to handle State cases.
According to court officials, Naguyo was expected to appear in court during the morning session to represent the State. When he failed to turn up, his colleagues repeatedly tried to reach him by phone but received no response.
Concerned about his unexplained absence, one of the officials went to his residence to check on him. After finding the house locked and receiving no response, the official alerted police.
Police officers reportedly forced their way into the residence, where they found Naguyo dead.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed Naguyo’s death, describing the news as a major loss to the institution.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the office of the DPP Jacquelyn Okui, the office said it was deeply saddened by the death of the State Attorney.
“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is deeply saddened to announce the death of one of its State Attorneys, Mr. Emmanuel Naguyo,” Okui said.
She said Naguyo’s body was discovered by a colleague at his residence in Nebbi at about 10 a.m. on Monday after colleagues sought to establish why he had not reported for duty.
“The unfortunate news has shocked the ODPP fraternity,” the statement added.
The office extended its condolences to Naguyo’s family, relatives, friends and colleagues, saying his death was a loss to the institution.
“The Office extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” Okui said.
According to the ODPP, Naguyo served as a State Attorney for three years, contributing to the institution’s work alongside fellow prosecutors.
“His contribution to the institution and the colleagues with whom he worked will be remembered with gratitude,” the statement said.
The ODPP said further information regarding funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
Police have kicked off investigations into the death.
