Maggie Kiweesi, the widow of late Ugandan musician Emmanuel Mayanja, popularly known as AK47, has died after a short illness, leaving behind their twin children.
Kiweesi passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Mengo Hospital after developing complications related to malaria.
According to AK47’s mother, Prossy Mayanja, Kiweesi was first admitted to Nsambya Hospital before her condition worsened, prompting her transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mengo Hospital, where she passed away.
Days before her death, Kiweesi had opened up in an interview about the challenges of raising her twins, Connie and Canaan, following the death of their father, AK47, in March 2015.
Her passing comes 11 years after the death of the celebrated musician, leaving their children without both parents.
Although Kiweesi maintained a largely private life, she occasionally attracted public attention. In 2021, she held a traditional introduction ceremony with musician Faisal Sseguya, popularly known as Rabadaba, before the two relocated to the United Kingdom. Their relationship later ended, and Kiweesi returned to Uganda with her children.
Tributes have since started pouring in, with State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere Nsbuga describing Kiweesi as her cousin and close friend.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of Miss Maggie Kiweesi, my dear cousin and friend,” Nameere said in a statement, adding that Kiweesi’s children are now orphaned.
The minister said vigil prayers are being held at the family home in Katabi as relatives travel from the United States to join funeral preparations.
Kiweesi will be laid to rest on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Kibbugga Village in Butambala District. Funeral prayers are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
Her death marks another painful loss for the Mayanja family, more than a decade after the passing of AK47, one of Uganda’s most celebrated musicians.
