Absa Group expands into Dubai to connect Gulf capital with Africa

Absa Group has expanded its international footprint with the opening of a new office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in a strategic move aimed at strengthening trade, investment and financial connections between the Middle East and Africa.

The office, located at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), will bring the financial services group closer to corporations, investors and financial institutions across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), while providing a platform for connecting international capital with business opportunities across African markets.

Dubai’s position as a major financial and commercial hub linking the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) makes it a strategic location for Absa to engage investors and institutions seeking business and investment opportunities across the continent.

Absa Bank Limited’s DIFC Branch is authorised under a Category 4 licence issued by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), effective July 15, 2026. The licence permits the branch to arrange investment deals, advise on financial products, and arrange and advise on credit.

Through the new office, eligible clients will have access to Absa’s Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) products and services, supported by the expertise and capabilities of the group’s wider African banking network.

Zaid Moola, Chief Executive of Corporate and Investment Banking at Absa, said international trade plays an important role in driving investment, business expansion and economic growth.

He said the Dubai office would strengthen the bank’s ability to connect clients with capital, market expertise and cross-border financial services needed to pursue opportunities along the Middle East-Africa trade corridor.

“Our presence in Dubai strengthens our ability to originate and support these flows, while drawing on Absa’s deep understanding of African markets,” Moola said.

Cheryl Buss, Chief Executive of Absa International, said the decision to establish a presence in Dubai reflected the growing importance of the Middle East in Africa’s trade and investment landscape.

She noted that successful investment decisions require more than access to capital, emphasising the importance of understanding local markets, building the right relationships and having confidence in how business opportunities can be pursued.

By combining Absa’s knowledge of African markets with a presence closer to regional decision-makers, Buss said the bank would be better positioned to develop relationships with clients at their headquarters and support their expansion into Africa.

Chief Executive Officer of DIFC Authority, Arif Amiri, welcomed Absa’s expansion, describing the financial centre as an important platform connecting capital, expertise and investment opportunities between the Middle East and Africa.

He said Absa’s extensive African network and financial expertise would contribute to strengthening the growing trade and investment corridor between the two regions.

Amiri added that the bank’s presence further reinforced Dubai’s position as an international financial hub and DIFC’s role in helping financial institutions access new markets and business opportunities.

Absa’s expansion forms part of its broader international corridor strategy, which seeks to connect global sources of capital and trade with investment opportunities across African markets.

The bank has identified several sectors with significant potential for cross-border investment, including infrastructure, energy, logistics, agriculture and fast-moving consumer goods.

These sectors are attracting interest from regional corporations, sovereign-linked entities, institutional investors and international trading companies seeking to expand their operations and investment portfolios across Africa.

Clinton Clarke, Senior Executive Officer of Absa Bank Limited’s DIFC Branch, said the Dubai office would help Middle Eastern businesses and investors better understand the commercial and regulatory environments across African markets.

He explained that investment opportunities differ across countries and sectors, making access to relevant market knowledge and specialised expertise essential for informed business decisions.

Clarke said Absa would use its Dubai presence to engage more closely with prospective investors, understand their business priorities and connect them with appropriate market and sector specialists across its African network.

The expansion is also expected to strengthen Absa’s international reach while maintaining its focus on the African markets it serves.

As engagement with GCC-based institutions grows, the bank intends to prioritise opportunities aligned with its sector expertise, client relationships and long-term growth strategy.

The move highlights the growing economic relationship between Africa and the Middle East, with financial institutions increasingly seeking to facilitate cross-border investment, trade and business partnerships.
