Uganda’s Second Deputy Mufti, Muhammad Haruna Bukenya, has been summoned to appear before the Kampala City Hall Court over allegations that he and businessman Elias Muzamiru Lubega obtained Shs 1 billion (approximately $288,000) from a Nigerian national in a purported gold deal.
Bukenya and Lubega are accused of allegedly defrauding Muhammad Kwaido by obtaining the money under the pretext of selling him three kilogrammes of gold.
The criminal summons were issued on Wednesday by Senior Magistrate Edgar Karakire, requiring the two accused to appear in court and answer to the allegations.
According to reports surrounding the case, the alleged scam originated from meetings at Old Kampala Mosque, where Bukenya reportedly introduced Kwaido to individuals presented as gold dealers.
Kwaido allegedly paid the money in anticipation of receiving the gold. However, the transaction later became the subject of a criminal complaint.
The case took a new turn after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) reportedly recalled the case file following a complaint lodged by Bukenya.
The circumstances surrounding the recall of the file and the subsequent court proceedings were not immediately clear.
The matter has been adjourned to November 25, 2026, when the court is expected to take it up again.
Bukenya and Lubega face allegations of fraud, but the claims remain unproven. Both are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
