Anti-graft protests: Police say heavy deployment will continue in Kampala

Police have said they will continue maintaining their heavy presence on Kampala streets in anticipation of the resumption of the protests against corruption.

The police and the army have since last week deployed heavily in Kampala following the break out of  protests in which youths seek to march to parliament to show discontent over the widespread corruption.

Speaking on Monday, Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesperson said they will continue heavy presence on streets until they deem it fit to leave.

“Deployments are based on our assessment of threat. If we assess that the threat is still there, we shall maintain deployment commensurate to that threat. At moment we feel there is need to have that deployment,” Rusoke said.

He also maintained police’s earlier stance that  there are several faces behind the protests.

“At an opportune time we will tell the public who is behind them. There are hallmarks and you can tell there are people behind the four we met recently but we let it to the public to judge. However, we stick to our guns and say we know there are several other people behind this arrangement. That’s why we didn’t find it comfortable as a demonstration.”

Rusoke said if the demonstrators were genuine, they would have come out with a plan and share it with police to facilitate “ a more legitimate expression.”
