The Deputy British High Commissioner to Uganda, Ms. Tiffany Kirlew has hosted a farewell event for the 2024/2025 Ugandan Chevening and Commonwealth scholars.

The event celebrated their achievements and wished them well as they prepare to pursue master’s and Ph.D. studies in the United Kingdom.

Chevening is the UK government’s flagship scholarship programme, offering fully funded one-year master’s degrees in any field at top UK universities.

The programme aims to develop global leaders with ambition, leadership potential, strong academic backgrounds, and a record of rising to prominent positions in their home countries.

Now in its 41st year, the Chevening scholarship has produced over 300 Ugandan beneficiaries who have returned home to contribute positively to their communities.

The Chevening Alumni Association currently comprises 314 members from diverse backgrounds, who have spearheaded impactful initiatives in climate change, health, education, support for people with disabilities, mentorship, and leadership programmes.

The Commonwealth Scholarships, provided by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), are part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to the Commonwealth.

Each year, around 800 students receive these scholarships to undertake postgraduate degrees at UK universities.

The programme aims to nurture talented and aspiring change-makers who might not otherwise afford education in the UK.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the Commonwealth Scholarship, with over 1,735 Ugandans benefiting from the programme, making significant contributions to the country’s development across various sectors, including education and finance.

The farewell event brought together outgoing scholars from both the Chevening and Commonwealth programmes, as well as alumni, key stakeholders from the Ministry of Education, and representatives from Prudential, a partner sponsor of a Chevening scholar for the second year running.

It was an opportunity for scholars to network and form lifelong connections that will support their personal and professional growth.

During her address, Ms. Kirlew encouraged the scholars to stay true to the values that earned them the scholarships—curiosity, integrity, and a passion for positive impact.

“Your contributions will shape the future of Uganda,” she said. “We believe you have the power to create lasting change, uplift others, and lead with empathy and understanding.”

For the 2024/2025 academic year, 20 Chevening scholars and over 16 Commonwealth scholars from Uganda have been selected, reflecting the ongoing partnership between Uganda and the UK in fostering educational excellence and leadership development.
