At least 67 drivers who were arrested during the drink-driving operation by Police in Kampala have spent the weekend behind the bars.

The suspects were arrested since Friday and detained at various police stations in Katwe, Jinja Road, and Wandegeya as they await court proceedings today, Monday, March 24.

Superintendent of Police Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson said the suspects are currently undergoing processing, which includes statement recording and  fingerprinting before being arraigned in court.

“Last night’s anti-drink driving operation resulted in the arrest of 67 suspects at three police stations: Katwe, Jinja Road & Wandegeya. The suspects are currently being held in detention, where they are undergoing processing, including statement recording, fingerprinting & preparation for court proceedings,” Kananura stated on X.

The police launched the operation in response to an increasing number of drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, particularly during weekends between 6:00 PM and late at night.

Police say this reckless behavior has significantly contributed to road accidents in Kampala, necessitating stricter enforcement measures.

Kananura reiterated the importance of responsible driving, warning that alcohol consumption behind the wheel is a leading cause of road crashes.

“We urge all drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol, a crucial step towards reducing road crashes & ensuring safer roads for everyone,” he emphasized.

According to the recently released 2024 police crime report, traffic offenses have decreased; however, road traffic crashes have risen by 6.4% within the same period.

The report highlights that reckless overtaking and speeding were the leading causes of accidents in 2024, accounting for 44.5% of all reported crashes, with alcohol consumption playing a significant role.

Police has vowed to maintain stringent measures to curb drunk driving and improve road safety in Kampala.
