Police in Ishaka have launched an investigation into the death of a student at Kampala International University (KIU) who allegedly committed suicide after failure to raise tuition fees for his course.

His lifeless body was discovered hanging from an avocado tree near the male students’ hostel.

The deceased, identified as John Lukoma, was a student at the university whose sudden death has sent shockwaves through the campus community.

Authorities suspect suicide but have emphasized that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed the incident.

“Our team responded immediately. The body was taken to KIU Teaching Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. For now, we are treating it as a suspected suicide,” Tayebwa stated.

Initial inquiries have revealed that Lukoma may have been struggling silently with personal challenges.

His roommate, Patrick Okoume, shared with authorities that Lukoma was overwhelmed by financial difficulties.

“John was carrying a heavy load, he was constantly stressed about money, tuition, food, rent, it all weighed on him. He wanted to finish his degree, but he didn’t see how he could. I tried to encourage him, but I don’t think he saw a way out,” Patrick said.

In response to the tragedy, the KIU administration released a statement encouraging students to prioritize their mental well-being and utilize available support services.

“This is a loss that cuts deep, even if you didn’t know John personally, his death touches us all. If you are feeling overwhelmed, please know you are not alone. Our counseling services are open to everyone. Let’s stand together and support one another,” the statement reads in part.

The Ishaka campus remains under a heavy cloud of grief, with students expressing sorrow and confusion as they come to terms with the loss.

Lukoma’s death has reignited conversations around mental health and the urgent need for support systems for young people facing academic and financial pressure.

Police say more details will be provided upon completion of the postmortem and interviews with key individuals close to the deceased.
