Two people have pleaded guilty to being part of the team that planted fake bombs in Munyonyo and Kalerwe in Kampala in 2025 that led to death of a number of people.
Hamza Lyavaala and Adiil Walusansa, all former Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) recruits, ,pleaded guilty to murder charges linked to the incident.
The two admitted to participating in plans to carry out an attack during the June 3, 2025 Martyrs Day celebrations near the Munyonyo Catholic Shrine, as well as a separate planned attack in Kalerwe.
They were jointly charged with Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains subject to trial.
According to the prosecution, the Munyonyo incident involved Sumayiya Baruhanga, who was allegedly carrying an explosive device and was killed when it detonated.
A boda boda rider was also killed in the incident, according to the prosecution.
The prosecution further alleges that a second incident occurred weeks later in Kalerwe Market, where a woman suspected of carrying an explosive device was shot dead. The alleged device was subsequently detonated by security operatives.
The cases stem from security incidents that heightened concern around possible attacks on civilians and worshippers in Kampala.
The prosecution alleges that Lyavaala and Walusansa were involved in plans connected to the two incidents. Their guilty pleas resulted in their conviction on the charges to which they admitted.
Byaruhanga, however, has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty. His case will therefore proceed separately as the court considers the evidence against him.
