The family of Benjamin Owor, popularly known as DJ Bush Baby, has released a tentative burial program following his sudden passing on Thursday at the age of 50.
The celebrated journalist and DJ was found dead at his home in Bugonga, a suburb in Division A of Entebbe Municipality, where he lived with family members.
Preparations are underway for a vigil service to be held tonight at the home of Owor’s sister in Kira. A requiem mass will follow tomorrow, also in Kira. His final send-off is scheduled for Saturday at his ancestral home in Tororo District.
Julie Otage, a close family friend, recounted the distressing discovery, noting that the beloved DJ was found lifeless inside the house.
“The fallen DJ was found lying in the house. His wife had been trying to reach him by phone, but he wasn’t responding. She called one of the family members living with him, and they found him deceased.”
Otage, who works with Owor’s widow, added, “This is a shock to us. I remember she wanted him to pick up their child from school, but he wasn’t answering. We were at work when the news reached us.”
Police in Entebbe retrieved Owor’s body and transported it to Mulago Hospital’s main mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Attempts by journalists to access the home in Bugonga were thwarted, as they were denied entry and prohibited from taking photos.
Charles Nyakana, a long-time work partner of Owor, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, revealing that they had a project scheduled for release this month.
“I’ve been working with him for a long time, and we collaborated on various projects. We had a project set to premiere in Entebbe this month, but as we speak, everything is on hold,” he said.
Nyakana also paid tribute to Owor’s enduring impact on Uganda’s entertainment scene.
“As a true Pride of Entebbe follower, DJ Bush Baby embodied the spirit of our town vibrant, passionate, and creative. His contributions to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered, and his legacy will live on through Wazo Dazo’s innovative endeavors,” he said.
The death of DJ Bush Baby has sent waves of grief across the nation and the East African region.
Known for nurturing talent and building influential brands in radio, television, and music, his legacy will remain etched in the industry he so passionately shaped.
