The government has extended the reopening date for all schools and education institutions across the country, citing the need to ensure the safety of learners following the General Elections.
In an official announcement issued on January 16, 2026, the Ministry of Education and Sports said all schools will now reopen on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, instead of the earlier date of February 2.
The extension applies to all education institutions, including international schools, tertiary institutions and universities.
According to the ministry, the decision was taken in light of the ongoing electoral activities and the need to provide a safe environment for learners and education staff.
“Due to the General Elections and in order to ensure the safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday, 10th February 2026,” said Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The ministry further clarified that Term One for the 2026 academic year will run from Tuesday, February 10 to Friday, May 1, 2026.
Turyagyenda directed all education administrators to strictly comply with the revised dates and the approved national school calendar.
“All school administrators are required to adhere firmly to these dates and the approved school calendar as published on the Ministry website,” she said.
The announcement applies to vice chancellors, principals, headteachers, parents, guardians, school administrators, students and the general public, and leaves no exception for private or international institutions.
The ministry had earlier announced on January 6, 2026, that schools would reopen on February 2, but revised the schedule following developments surrounding the elections.
Parents and school administrators have been advised to plan accordingly as the country transitions back to normal academic operations after the electoral period.
