The International University of East Africa (IUEA) has received two Platinum Awards at the 2026 East Africa Brand Quality Awards, renewing attention on the role of universities in preparing graduates for a changing world of work.
IUEA received awards in the categories of Best Private Technology University in East Africa and Best Private Innovative University in East Africa at a ceremony held at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Friday, October 16.
The recognition comes amid growing debate about how universities can bridge the gap between academic training and the practical skills required by employers.
For institutions of higher learning, the challenge is to ensure that graduates possess not only theoretical knowledge but also the technical competence, problem-solving abilities and adaptability needed to contribute to industry and enterprise development.
According to information provided by IUEA, Vice Chancellor Prof. Emeka Akaezuwa highlighted the university’s commitment to investing in technology and offering programmes aligned with changing industry requirements.
That focus reflects a wider priority for higher education: ensuring that academic programmes keep pace with developments in areas such as information technology, engineering, business and other sectors affected by digital transformation.
Innovation in higher education can take different forms, including the development of new academic programmes, technology-enabled teaching, practical research, entrepreneurship initiatives and partnerships with employers.
These approaches can help students connect classroom learning with real-world applications while giving institutions opportunities to respond to emerging economic needs.
For universities seeking to strengthen graduate employability, collaboration with industry is particularly important. Internships, workplace placements, applied research and employer participation in curriculum development can help students gain relevant experience before entering the job market.
IUEA’s recognition in the technology and innovation categories offers an opportunity to examine how the university is incorporating these approaches into its teaching and student development programmes.
However, the awards alone do not establish the employment performance of its graduates or the effectiveness of particular academic programmes. Such conclusions require evidence from graduate tracer studies, employer surveys, internship records and other independently verifiable indicators.
The East Africa Brand Quality Awards recognise organisations and brands across a range of sectors.
The organisers describe their evaluation process as combining market research, public participation and professional jury assessment. Their published criteria include business performance, growth, innovation and stakeholder feedback.
The awards programme began in 2021, and its 2026 edition marked its sixth year. The organisers say the awards are intended to highlight organisations that contribute to economic and social development across the region.
IUEA’s two Platinum Awards recognise its standing in the specific categories announced by the university. They should not be confused with statutory university accreditation, formal academic rankings or independent measurements of graduate employment.
The broader test for technology-focused universities is whether their programmes equip students with skills that remain relevant as industries evolve.
Employers increasingly need graduates who can learn continuously, adapt to new tools, work collaboratively and apply their knowledge to practical problems. Universities must therefore balance academic foundations with hands-on experience and exposure to professional environments.
For IUEA, the next step is to demonstrate how its commitment to technology and innovation is reflected in students’ learning experiences, research activities, industry partnerships and career outcomes.
The university captured the significance of its double recognition in the statement: “Two Platinum Awards. One Bold Vision. Transforming Africa Through Technology and Innovation.”
The recognition provides IUEA with an opportunity to strengthen its profile in the region. Sustained progress, however, will depend on how effectively the institution converts its stated ambitions into tangible benefits for students, employers and society.
