On May 12, 2013, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II appointed Charles Peter Mayiga as the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda.
Today marks twelve years since that historic appointment. Katikkiro Mayiga became the fifth fully appointed Katikkiro to serve under Kabaka Mutebi II.
While figures such as Joseph Patrick Musoke and Emmanuel Ssendawula temporarily performed similar duties, only five individuals, including Mayiga, have been officially vested with the role during this reign.
Over the past twelve years, Katikkiro Mayiga has spearheaded several groundbreaking initiatives and developments that have transformed the Kingdom of Buganda.
One of his most notable contributions is the “Ettofaali” fundraising campaign, which mobilized resources from across the country and the diaspora to restore the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and symbol of Buganda’s heritage.
Under his stewardship, the Masengere Building, a once-abandoned project, was completed and now stands tall as a modern symbol of Buganda’s resilience and growth.
Katikkiro Mayiga also oversaw the establishment of BBS Terefayina, the kingdom’s television station, aimed at promoting Buganda’s culture, news, and development programs.
Katikkiro Mayiga is also the visionary behind the Kabaka Birthday Run, which has grown into one of the most attended charity runs on the African continent.
Proceeds from the run have significantly supported health, education, agriculture, and economic empowerment programs within the kingdom.
A renowned author, Katikkiro Mayiga has published several books, including the widely acclaimed “King on the Throne” and “Ettofaali”, among others. His works reflect deep insight into leadership, culture, and development.
He has also overseen the renovation of royal palaces across various counties in Buganda and the recent establishment of a hospital in Ssingo County, enhancing healthcare access for Kabaka’s subjects.
Additionally, in 2025, the Kingdom launched Kindergarten schools in several counties, demonstrating commitment to early childhood education.
A leader who is particularly passionate about the youth, Katikkiro Mayiga has worked tirelessly to bring young people closer to the monarchy.
Through his inclusive messaging and programs, he has placed youth at the center of the kingdom’s development agenda.
Despite his many achievements, his tenure has not been without challenges. As the longest-serving Katikkiro in Buganda’s recent history, he has had to navigate several storms.
Among them is the concern over the Kabaka’s health, which triggered negative narratives and speculations on social media.
Additionally, the land grabbing crisis in Buganda posed a significant challenge. Through the Buganda Land Board, Mayiga introduced the “Kyapa Mu Ngalo” (Title in Your Hands) initiative to formalize land ownership, though it faced opposition from some quarters.
He has also worked diplomatically to manage tensions and disunity within the royal clan (Abalangira). Politically, Mayiga has often found himself in the crosshairs of Uganda’s turbulent political landscape, with various parties seeking his endorsement.
However, with his exceptional oratory skills and political wisdom, he has remained neutral and focused on the Kingdom’s development.
As the saying goes, “A fruitful mango tree attracts many stones.” Despite the obstacles, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga continues to serve with dedication, vision, and a commitment to uplifting Buganda and its people.
