A laboratory technician attached to Lugoba Health Centre III in Moyo District has been remanded to prison over allegations of extorting millions of shillings from job seekers after falsely promising to secure them positions in the district health sector.
Richard Amegovu was arraigned before court on Wednesday by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and charged with obtaining money by false pretence.
He was remanded until August 26, 2026, when he is expected to return to court.
According to investigators, Amegovu and other suspects, who are still at large, allegedly targeted several job seekers in Moyo Town Council between 2023 and 2024.
The suspects allegedly claimed that they could secure positions for the applicants as enrolled nurses and clinical officers under Moyo District Local Government.
Investigators allege that the applicants paid between Shs3 million and Shs10 million each, believing they would be offered the promised jobs.
However, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit says the promises were false and that the jobs were never secured.
The case follows complaints received from residents of Moyo District during the ongoing “Expose the Corrupt” campaign, spearheaded by the Minister of State for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara.
The Anti-Corruption Unit said investigations are continuing in collaboration with the Police and other security agencies to establish the full extent of the alleged scheme and identify other suspects who may have been involved.
The Unit has also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of corruption and fraud through established channels.
