A new law is in the offing to ensure government withdraws funding from political parties that refuse to participate in the activities of the Inter Party Organisation for Dialogue(IPD) but also fail to subscribe to the National Consultative Forum(NCF).
Napak Woman MP Faith Nakut was recently granted leave to prepare and produce the Political Parties and Organisation(Amendment) Bill 2025.
The bill
The bill seeks to amend the Political Parties and Organisations Act, Cap. 178 to restrict government funding and other public resources provided to political parties and political organisations that are represented in Parliament to only those that are members of the National Consultative Forum and participate in IPOD activities.
The National Unity Platform has on several occasions snubbed the activities of the IPOD and if the amendment is passed, the biggest opposition party will lose the funds it receives from government every year to run its activities.
The proposed law also seeks to force political parties speak and dialogue with each other as a means of strengthening democratic governance in Uganda.
It also seeks to promote open and constructive communication among political parties represented in Parliament but also provide a neutral platform where representatives from different political parties can engage in dialogue.
