The National Identification and Registration Authority(NIRA) has unveiled the new look for the upgraded National Ids.
Mass enrollment for new national IDs starts on May, 27 at all parishes countrywide.
On Wednesday , NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo said the new ids will also have biometrics including fingerprints and the iris among others.
She said the IDs will have a security feature that uses laser engraving to embed multiple images within the card, visible at different angles, enhancing security against counterfeiting.
It will also have Machine Readable Zone which is a standardized section on identity documents containing encoded data that can be quickly and reliably read by machines , just like passport readers.
The NIRA ED noted that the IDs will also have a two-dimensional barcode containing data readable by smartphones or specialized scanners, commonly used for storing URLs, text, or identification data, or encrypted date and also 2D barcode to decode information stored in barcodes (linear or 2D) printed on cards or documents, enabling rapid data retrieval and verification.
“Furthermore, the new ID will support online verification, offline verification, digital signature, secure credentials access support, eGovernment service support, physical authentication, all leading mobile/tablet platforms and Mobile ID,” Kisembo said.
She noted that there will be 5,500 kits used for the entire exercise with only 5,300 kits to be deployed and the remaining 200 to be kept in reserve.
