The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a National Resistance Movement (NRM)-leaning pressure group led by Uganda’s CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has withdrawn its earlier endorsement of Speaker Anita Annet Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa for the leadership of the 12th Parliament.
In a statement issued by PLU General Secretary and Kasambya MP, David Kabanda, the pressure group announced that the endorsement made on March 11, 2026, had been “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”
The earlier directive by PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba had guided all PLU-leaning Members of Parliament-elect to support Among for Speaker and Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker.
However, the new communication says PLU members should instead support candidates who will be presented by President Yoweri Museveni for the two top parliamentary positions.
“ The Leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda encourages its Hon. Members Elect to support the candidates that will be presented to them by H.E the President for the position of Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” Kabanda said.
Kabanda added that members of the pressure group are expected to follow the guidance of Gen. Muhoozi at all times.
PLU has in recent years emerged as a powerful political pressure group within the ruling NRM circles, mobilising support for Gen. Muhoozi and taking positions on key national political issues.
