Several pupils are feared dead and many others injured following a tragic road crash involving a bus carrying learners of Kings David Junior School, Ndejje, in Kapchorwa District on Wednesday evening.
The school bus, registration number UA 108BQ, was transporting pupils who had travelled to Kapchorwa for a school tour when it was involved in the fatal crash.
According to the Uganda Police Force, the accident occurred at Chekwatit Village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo Sub-county, Kapchorwa District, at around 8:00 p.m.
The Traffic and Road Safety Police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, confirmed the incident, saying police had registered a fatal road traffic crash involving the school bus.
“The Uganda Police Force confirms that police in Kapchorwa have this evening registered a fatal road traffic crash involving a school bus, registration number UA 108BQ, transporting pupils of Kings David Junior School, Ndejje,” Kananura said.
He added that police officers and other emergency responders had been deployed to the scene to conduct rescue operations and establish the number of casualties.
“Police and other emergency responders are at the scene carrying out rescue operations and establishing the number of casualties and injured persons. At this stage, the exact number of fatalities and injuries has not yet been confirmed. More information will be provided as soon as it becomes available,” Kananura added.
By press time, authorities had not released the official number of fatalities or injured persons as rescue teams continued their operations.
The crash comes just days after another school transport tragedy in which a bus carrying students collided with a train, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over road safety standards for school transport vehicles and the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures to protect learners.
